Subcutaneous Injection Instructions

Preparing for Your Injection

Before administering your medication, inspect the injection site carefully. Avoid areas that are red, irritated, bruised, or otherwise damaged. To minimize discomfort and skin irritation, rotate injection sites regularly rather than using the same location repeatedly.

Clean the selected area with an alcohol swab and allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

Preparing Your Medication

Before drawing up your medication, verify that you have the correct medication and dose as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

  1. Remove the protective cap from the medication vial.
  2. Clean the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab.
  3. Pull back the syringe plunger to draw in air equal to your prescribed dose.
  4. Insert the needle into the vial and inject the air. This helps equalize pressure inside the vial and makes it easier to withdraw the medication.
  5. Turn the vial upside down while keeping the needle tip in the medication.
  6. Slowly pull back the plunger until the correct dose has been drawn into the syringe.
  7. Check for air bubbles and remove them if necessary before administering the injection.

Always avoid touching the needle to keep it sterile.

Selecting an Injection Site

Choosing the proper injection site helps ensure your medication is absorbed effectively and comfortably. Common locations for subcutaneous injections include the abdomen, thigh, and upper arm.

Abdomen

The abdomen is often preferred because it provides a consistent layer of fatty tissue and is easy to access. Select an area at least two inches away from your belly button and avoid any scars, bruises, or irritated skin.

Thigh

The front or outer portion of the thigh is another suitable location. Avoid injecting into the inner thigh or areas that feel tender.

Upper Arm

The back of the upper arm can also be used, particularly if you prefer a less visible injection site. Choose an area between the shoulder and elbow that has adequate fatty tissue.

Injection Technique

Step 1: Gather Supplies

Collect all necessary materials before starting, including your medication, syringe, alcohol swabs, gauze, and an approved sharps container. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Inspect the medication before use. The solution should appear clear and free of particles. Do not use the medication if it appears cloudy, discolored, or contains visible debris.

Step 2: Choose and Clean the Site

Select an approved injection area and cleanse the skin using an alcohol swab. Allow the area to air dry completely.

Step 3: Administer the Injection

Hold the syringe at a 90-degree angle to the skin unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider. Insert the needle in a smooth, controlled motion. Slowly inject the medication and leave the needle in place for a few seconds after the medication has been delivered.

Step 4: Remove the Needle

Withdraw the needle carefully and apply light pressure with gauze if needed. Do not rub the injection site.

Step 5: Dispose of Supplies

Immediately place used needles and syringes into an approved sharps container. Never reuse needles or dispose of them in household trash. Keep sharps containers out of reach of children and pets.

Rotating Injection Sites

Regularly rotating injection sites can help reduce skin irritation, tenderness, and tissue changes that may occur with repeated injections in the same area.

A simple rotation schedule may involve alternating between the abdomen, thighs, and upper arms. Keeping a record of your injection locations can help ensure you are consistently rotating sites.

Follow any site rotation recommendations provided by your healthcare provider or included with your medication.

Follow Your Healthcare Provider's Instructions

Proper injection technique and site selection are important parts of successful treatment. Always follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider and contact them with any questions regarding your medication or administration technique.
